Institute Description
The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden is specialized in the treatment of tic disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism spectrum disorders, eating disorders, trauma-related disturbances, and schizophrenia.
The department engages intensively in child and adolescent psychiatric research. Within this framework, the employees of five independent research groups (Experimental Developmental Psychopathology, Cognitive Neurophysiology, Cognitive Developmental Neurobiology, Stress and Substance Dependence in Adolescence, Translational Developmental Neuroscience) design and implement various clinical studies and conduct pharmaceutical studies.
The department’s research focuses on developing a better understanding of the psychopathology of and treatment options for tic disorders. AD/HD, OCD, ASD, eating disorders and affect regulation using a range of approaches including neuroimaging and neurophysiology, genetics and immunology, neuropsychopharmacology, pharmacovigilance, and clinical trials.
Short profile of group
Prof. Dr. med. Veit Roessner holds the position of Medical Director of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden. He is an expert for child and adolescent psychiatric treatment and initiated various research projects in tic disorders, ADHD, and OCD. He contributed significantly to the development of the European Clinical Guidelines for Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders. Prof. Dr. Roessner is also involved in a number of international research projects. Notably, he is a WP learder in the international study EMTICS (European Multicentre Tics in Children Studies), is involved in the IMAGE research project (International Multi-center ADHD Gene project), and in a number of pharmacological studies. He also participates in international consortia, for example, the European Society for Study of Tourette Syndrome (ESSTS) or the European Network of Research on Hyperkinetic Disorders (EUNETHYDIS).
Dr. Judith Buse is a psychologist, working as a postdoc at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, TU Dresden, and currently training as a certified child and adolescent psychotherapist. Her research interests are the neurocognitive aspects of tic disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder with a focus on dopamine-related dysfunctions, such as the processing of predictions and reward. Conducting EEG and fMRI studies, she further investigates emotional attention in children and adolescents with ADHD. She is engaged in several international multicenter projects on tic disorders, including EMTICS and OnlineTics.
Dr. Anne Uhlman studied biology at the Humboldt University Berlin, Germany and received her doctoral degree in neuroscience at the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health in Cape Town, South Africa. With research expertise in addiction, psychotic disorders and emotion regulation, she participates in international neuroimaging genetics projects, such as ENIGMA. Since 2018, she is the scientific coordinator at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy and supports TIC Genetics study in this function.
